WELCOME!

It was the week between Christmas and the New Year. We had driven up to Connecticut to see our son and to celebrate the holidays with him. We found ourselves hiking on a very cold and raw winter's day in the little known, unpopulated northern part of the state. Bob and I made our way along a steep trail in a beautiful hemlock forest. We were mostly concentrating on our feet to make sure we didn't go splat as the rocky trail was strewn with leaves and it was hard to make out exactly where to put each boot to prevent a nasty fall. But when we stopped for a moment, we looked up, and above the dark, winter forest, there appeared a blue, sun-washed sky and the fresh green of the hemlocks, standing brightly apart from the grays and browns of the bare trees.

It felt magical, a moment of transcendent stillness in the midst of the quiet forest. As we went along further, we came upon another magical sight: a small stream, dancing down over moss-covered rocks, singing out its gentle, wild lullaby as it tripped down the hillside.
If it hadn't been about 15 degrees F., we might have lingered a while by the stream. Still, its soothing song followed us as we moved on. The smell of damp oak leaves mingled with fresh pine scents. An occasional blue jay alerted other forest-dwellers to our presence. But we saw not another soul, neither wild animal nor human.

And so there we were, more than 400 miles from home. But amid so much beauty, woods, streams, and then, finally, at hike's end, a lovely river, we felt embraced by Nature and closer than ever to the Source of all things. Wishing you all such a magical and wondrous New Year!
